Calcium Carbide Reacts With Water

Calcium Carbide Reacts With Water

Experiment description

This experiment demonstrates the reaction of calcium carbide with water. When calcium carbide is mixed with water, it produces acetylene gas. If the container is sealed, the gas builds up pressure. With little water the reaction is weak, while with more water the gas production increases and the container expands. In a tightly sealed container, high pressure can cause the container to burst.
