Experiment description
This experiment demonstrates combustion in carbon compounds. When a watch glass is held over a yellow sooty flame, black soot gets deposited due to incomplete combustion. When held over a blue flame, no soot is formed because combustion is complete, showing the difference between sooty and clean flames.
