Identification of cation - Flame Test [ Salt Analysis ]

Experiment description

In this experiment, we are going to perform the flame test to identify specific metal ions (cations) present in a given salt. We do this by mixing a small amount of the salt with concentrated hydrochloric acid to form a paste, dipping a clean platinum wire loop into it, and holding it in a hot, non-luminous flame. Because the metal chlorides vaporize easily in the heat, they absorb energy and release it as a characteristic colored light. By observing these distinctive colors both with the naked eye and through a blue glass, we can easily determine which metal ion is in the salt.
